Friday 5 September SFD
Next Friday will be the last Student Free Day for 2025. Staff will be deepening their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Culture and Perspectives through the Crossing Cultures workshop. Teaching staff will be unpacking the V9 Science Curriculum and developing an implementation plan. Specialist staff will be deepening their understanding about how AI can support their teaching and learning program and considerations and adjustments for Hearing Impaired. Teacher Aides will also be engaging in CPR training and online courses to learn how to support student learning more effectively in the classroom. It will be a very productive day for everyone.
CSI visit
Last week local Principals and the School Supervisor visited our school to learn about our implementation of V9 English curriculum, in particular the Shared and Dialogic reading approach in our Structured Literacy sequence. Our visitors were informed about the ISS approach by two of its architects, Sascha Rogers (HOD-C) and Steve Box (DP), and then visited classrooms from years 2-6 across the school. The visitors were so impressed by the quality of reading instruction and the sophistication of the dialogue that our students were engaging in around the complex and challenging texts they were exploring together. The skills the children are developing to comprehend a text deeply, will be easily transferable to all texts they read, and assist in our quest to help our learners to be avid readers and critical thinkers with a curious mindset. The feedback from our visitors was to continue to evolve our practice through observing and reflecting together, to ensure consistency and alignment.
School Council
This Tuesday, the School Council will meet in its capacity to assist with school governance. The School Council looks at the strategic operations of the school, including budgeting, infrastructure, strategic planning and Annual Implementation Plan monitoring. Thank you to Peter Finch (President) and the other members of School Council for their investment in our school.
2026 Enrolment Intentions
Parents of Prep to year 5 students who will NOT be returning to ISS in 2026 are requested to email admin@indooroopillyss.eq.edu.au with their child’s name, current class and destination school. Knowing our enrolments for next year helps us enormously with class formation, teacher recruitment and classroom accommodation needs. All of these allow for the smoothest possible start to the new school year. Your assistance is greatly appreciated by our staff. Please provide this information by Friday 12 September.

Book Week 2025
It’s official – Book Week 2025 was an absolute sensation! It did NOT rain on our parade, and our students and teachers were able to show off their costumes and enthusiasm to a delighted crowd of onlookers; parents and peers.
Days like this are only made possible with the willingness and commitment of our staff and parents, working together to make the magic happen.
To our behind-the-scenes literacy coach and organiser Amie Neil and our supercharged MC Sascha Rogers, the BIGGEST thank you for all you did to make Book Week 2025 one of the most spectacular school events of the year!
2026 School House System
At the recent Student Council meeting, the re-structuring of the school house system for 2026 was the main agenda item for discussion amongst members of the Student Council.
The inevitable question of ‘why?’ generated a lot of discussion and deep thinking from the students, resulting in the following suppositions and conclusions:
- The consequences of the explorations of Cook, Flinders and Oxley had a negative impact on First Nations’ peoples; their arrival led to significant trauma including loss of culture and dispossession of land and rights
- The large number of students at our school necessitates more houses, so there are fewer students in each house
- It will provide opportunities for students of different and varying skills and interests to contribute to house competitions.
At our Values parade in Term 4, we will retire he exiting house names, with the swimming carnivals in Week 9 next term being the last event students will compete in the Cook, Flinders and Oxley houses. In Term 4 Week 10, the five new houses will be introduced.
Silly Socks Day
Past student Mia Wilkinson is a strong contender for the Brisbane 2032 Paralympics – let’s show our support by wearing our silly socks and bringing a gold coin donation on Friday, 12th September.
Silly Socks Day, an annual event in the ISS calendar is held each year to raise awareness of the dangers of sepsis and in support of ‘Movement for Mia’. https://www.givenow.com.au/movementformia

Empathy & mindful colouring in 5F
This term, 5F have been focusing on empathy as part of The Resilience Project. Students explored what it means to understand and share the feelings of others, and discussed how empathy can help build stronger friendships and a kinder classroom community. To support this learning, the class also enjoyed some mindful colouring sessions. This quiet, creative activity gave students the chance to slow down, practise being present in the moment, and reflect on the importance of caring for themselves and others.

Kindy to School Transition
The transition from Kindy to Prep is such an exciting time! This week, I have had a wonderful time visiting centres and talking with parents about school readiness.
Sometimes parents feel pressure to focus on teaching sounds, numbers, and curriculum concepts before school begins – but that’s our job once your child starts Prep. What’s most important right now are the everyday skills that come from play and interaction: recognising their own name, noticing patterns and ‘maths’ in nature, asking and answering questions, listening to and talking about stories, running and climbing at the park, and building hand strength by picking things up and moving them around. In short – lots of play, talking, and enjoying time together!
Over the next few months, bring your child along to Story Time sessions and book into the Term 4 Student Play and Parent Workshops. These opportunities help children become familiar with our Prep Precinct. Without question, the best gift you can give your child before they start school – and beyond – is simply being present, listening, and sharing precious moments.
Workshop booking details will be sent out on Monday 15th September.
Are you yet to enrol for Prep 2026?
Families interested in Outside School Hours Care should enrol before the EOI for 2026 places opens on 8/09/2025.
Download our Enrolment Pack to get started.
Please email admin@indooroopillyss.eq.edu.au to provide your student's details so we can anticipate their application and include them in our pre-Prep plans.

Prep D have had a fun-filled term! The P–2 Cross Country was a highlight—we loved seeing all the children running with such enthusiasm around the school. Their energy was contagious, and they had the best time. We also enjoyed celebrating Book Week with the Book Character Parade. The creativity and effort put into the costumes was fantastic—everyone looked amazing!

Would you go jetty jumping?
After reading the story ‘Jetty Jumping’, by Andrea Rowe and Hannah Sommerville, 2C weighed up the pros and cons about jetty jumping. Here are a few examples of our persuasive writing.
Would you go jetty jumping?

1C Book Week

Reverse Garbage Incursion
Last Thursday, 4C students attended the reverse garbage incursion as part of our integrated Design Technologies and Science unit. Students were given a design brief to create a marble run, utilising different materials and various forces to make it work. Each group came prepared with a design, and armed with flexible thinking in order to problem solve any issues encountered during the testing phase.

Year 4 Book Week Reflections
4B – Book Week is one of, my favourite days in the entire year! It’s full of fun it celebrates literature with a big parade.
4C – It was a fun day with a lot of creative work.
4D – Book Week is one of my favourite celebrations of the year because you get to dress up as a character from a good book!
4D – I really like how everybody dressed up and had a good time.
4E – Book Week was fun because of all the people who dressed in costumes.
4F – Everybody’s costumes were very different, and the preps had very good class ideas.
4H – The parade was colourful, fun and exciting, there were great costumes, and the parade had a fun, loud and happy atmosphere.
4I – Book week was fun because we got to dress up as any character from a book.
Fishing for Frogs – Year 5 dives into the science of refraction
This term in Science, Year 5 have been exploring light and how it changes. This week students have been studying refraction - how light bends when it travels through different materials like air and water.
After learning about how First Nations peoples use the knowledge of refraction to aid in spearfishing, students in 5C and 5E conducted their own spearfishing experiment…with a fun twist.
Students working in small groups placed a frog lolly in a clear container filled with water. First, they made predictions about what they would see when looking straight down at the frog and what would happen if they looked at if from an angle. They quickly discovered that the position of the frog appeared to change depending on their viewpoint – thanks to refraction.
Next came the challenge: spearing the frog with a skewer! It wasn’t as easy as it looked. The bending of light made the frog appear to be in a different position, making accurate ‘spearfishing’ quite the task.
This hands-on experiment not only helped students understand how light behaves in water, but also gave them insight into how scientific knowledge has been applied by cultures throughout history.

3H enjoyed this year’s Book Week celebrations. The class read Every Night at Midnight by Peter Cheong which was the inspiration for our door decorations. We joined in the whole school Book Week parade, designed and made bookmarks for the Bookmark Competition and participated in the virtual author talk with illustrator Nisaluk Chantanakom.

3D - I loved how everyone dressed up , and also the activities like the dance at the end.
3G- I loved walking around the oval and how everybody joins together.
3H- I liked how we all went around and people blew bubbles.
3F- I love how people could customize and unite.
3F- I like how people dance around the oval.
3C- Book Week is as fun as opening presents on your birthday.
3E- I loved how everyone joined in on the songs and dances.
3B- I loved how everyone joined in at dancing and singing.
Book Battle
Thank you to Marianna Shek for volunteering her time to organise a Year 3 Book Battle in the school library for interested families to participate in this week, as a part of Book Week celebrations and a desire to spread her love for literacy. Parents and students answered three rounds of trivia questions, solved some puzzles and performed some superb character acting, about the book Super Sleuth by David Walliams. Well done to the students who won the battle against their parents.

6C Book Week - in Words
Here is how one of my students used their words to describe our wonderful Book Week Parade. It might not have come from a book, but neither did some of the costumes. It was a wonderful morning we all shared.
This year’s book week parade was spectacular; it was filled with bubbles and students and teachers wearing different variegated costumes. Book week parade was filled with joy and giggles, children and teachers got to wear their favourite book character costumes resembling them, showing their interests with books. Trendy songs were played, letting the whole school dance and sing along, having a moment of jubilation. Every class was allowed to walk around Singleton Oval with their remarkable outfits, leaving an occasional memory. While walking around the oval, children were allowed to reach for the bubbles and dance, leaving a glorious remembrance. Overall, book week was filled with laughter and enjoyment, allowing the whole school to be filled with happiness.
