Celebrating Term 1
Thank you to the teaching teams for the excellent work they have done in implementing the new English curriculum this term. The introduction of structured literacy routines, formalising a consistent approach for literacy practices, has been embraced by staff and students alike. On a recent walkthrough multiple students shared how their increasing confidence with the technical aspects of English helps them feel more confident when writing.
NCCD and Personal Learning Plans
The National Consistent Collection of school data (NCCD) collects data about school students with disability in Australia who are receiving adjustments in a consistent, reliable and systematic way. It enables schools, education authorities and governments to better understand the needs of students with disability and how they can best be supported at school. Any child who is identified as needing additional support or adjustments to access learning may be identified as part of the NCCD even if they don’t have an identified disability. Our school develops a Personalised Learning Plan for students who are identified as part of the NCCD. This documents the adjustments made for individual student to access their learning. The NCCD data collection is a summary of school numbers, rather than individual students. The information on individual students in retained at school level, like any other documentation that is relevant at a school level during a child’s time at school. I have included a link on NCCD to provide further insight- https://www.education.gov.au/download/18342/getting-started/38239/document/pdf. If you have any further questions, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s class teacher or the learning enhancement teacher for your child’s year level.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to those of you who were able to attend the recent parent teacher interviews. The new system, in a central location, ensures a more efficient process for adhering to the interview times for all parties. If you missed booking a time, I encourage you to contact the class teacher. This is a time for teachers to share how your child is progressing with their learning and what they may need to be working towards.
Thank you, Year 6 Camp Staff
Thank you to the Year 6 teaching team and the additional staff from other areas of the school for being willing to give up their time to supervise children on a four night school camp. Your generosity allows our children to be exposed to outdoor learning opportunities that help create incredible childhood memories. The rural nature of the Year 6 camp on a farm certainly gives our Year 6 students a completely different experience and we are so glad they had such a wonderful and worthwhile time.
Facilities Update
The school pool will be re-painted next term, as part of continued efforts to upgrade school facilities. Over the school holidays there are also plans to replace the roof and eaves of the current Administration building, externally clean multiple locations and trim trees on the embankment and bottom oval. Planning is underway for a shaded outdoor learning area to replace the Dragon playground.
School Audit
Congratulations to our Administration Team (Ann, Janet, Vasuhi and Janet), led by Business Manager Taryn Lowe, for the outstanding result in the recent school Administration audit. The systems and processes that this team have in place ensures that our school can operate efficiently and effectively at all times. I know the school and our students are in safe hands with the guidance of this team.

School Magazine Co-Editor
Are you interested in publishing, design or photography?
Our School Magazine needs a parent volunteer who can be a co-editor for the 2025 issue.
Create something that celebrates our children’s year at ISS and builds community pride through this cherished magazine.
You will be working in partnership with Matt Hade, who has been the editor since 2020, and who is continuing as a co-editor also.
If you have any questions, please contact matt.hade@isspandc.org.au
Update Contact Details
Parent details
Sometimes we need to contact parents during the school day or after school so it is important we have the correct contact information. If you have changed any of the following details, please ensure you update these via email to admin@indooroopillyss.eq.edu.au
• Mobile phone number
• Email address
• Workplace phone number
Emergency contact people
If the school is unable to contact parents, we would refer to the details of your alternate emergency contact people. Every family should have at least one alternative emergency contact person who could assist in locating parents eg work colleague, friend, neighbour, family member.
Residential address
If you have changed your residential address this can be updated via QParents. Please note it is not a requirement to change schools if you have left our catchment area but it is important that the school’s records are accurate.

Finding Calm in the Chaos
2) Stay Connected – Challenges feel easier when shared. A quick chat with a friend or checking in on someone else can be uplifting!
3) Look for the Good – Even in difficult moments, there are small joys to be found – a kind gesture, a beautiful sunrise, or even the quiet moments with a cup of tea!

Year 6 Building Resilience
Our Year 6 students have been mindful and focused each week in their Resilience Project lessons, developing important skills in gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness. These lessons are helping them manage challenges, build strong relationships, and develop a positive mindset.
Most recently, 6C explored Lesson 3: Ripples, which focuses on kindness and empathy. Students discussed how small acts of caring—like helping at home, supporting a friend, or showing kindness at school—can create a ripple effect that spreads through the community. Inspired by the quote, “A simple act of caring creates an endless ripple that comes back to you,” they reflected on how even the smallest actions can make a big difference.
In addition, students also recognised that sometimes people face barriers to showing kindness and empathy, such as fear of judgement, feeling too busy, or not knowing how to help. Together, they explored strategies to break down these barriers, like leading by example, making time for others, and remembering that even small gestures—like a smile or kind word—can have a big impact.
Well done, Year 6! Keep spreading kindness and positivity!

Year 3 Harmony Day
Last Friday, 3F had a fantastic time celebrating Harmony Day. After the whole-school parade, we returned to our classroom to continue the festivities. We celebrated the rich diversity of cultures by sharing food from different parts of the world. The students were excited to try Nepalese spicy fish, Japanese sushi, Indian dishes, and much more. We were delighted to welcome parents and grandparents to join in this cultural feast. Our class enjoyed learning about the languages, flags, customs, and cuisines from countries across the globe.

Year 5 Maths
This term, our Year 5 students took their learning of decimals to the next level by applying their knowledge to a 100-metre dash! As part of our math unit on decimals to the hundredths place, students had the chance to run races while timing themselves, which helped them see how decimals are used in real life.
Students saw how decimals play a significant role in everyday life, from measuring precise times in sports to calculating distances or speeds. By timing themselves and reflecting on the data, they were able to see how even small differences, like hundredths of a second, can make a big impact.
It was a great way to not only practice math skills but also see firsthand how important accuracy is when recording information. The students were engaged, motivated, and excited to explore the world of decimals in a fun and meaningful way!

4B – Maths
Students have been busy learning about decimals and fractions through a range of learning experiences and problem-solving activities. In our classroom, we believe in working collaboratively in groups to help solve questions. With a focus on building a shared language around ISS Learner Assets, below are photos of the students demonstrating the assets of Communicators and Contributors.

2C Science
In Science, Year 2 have been turning everyday materials into something extraordinary!!
We have had so much fun exploring and investigating ways to change materials and have learned a lot about their properties.
We have made changes to the materials without changing their composition.
We have folded, bent, twisted, scrunched and cut materials to create amazing sculptures.
Here are just a few of our masterpieces.

Navigating Screen Time Wisely
Managing children's screen time is a common concern for parents. The eSafety Commissioner recommends staying engaged with your child's online activities and encouraging a balance between screen use and offline pursuits.
Creating a family plan that includes agreed-upon time limits and device-free zones, such as during meals or before bedtime, can promote healthier habits. Parental controls are useful tools to monitor and limit online content, but open communication about their use is essential. Modelling good screen practices yourself sets a positive example for your child.
For more tips, refer to the eSafety Commissioner's guide on screen time. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/issues-and-advice/screen-time

Choir Evening – Harmony Folk Night
We enjoyed a lovely evening of songs from around the world to celebrate Harmony Day. Our five choirs engaged the audience with songs from Liberia, New Zealand, Germany, Japan and of course Australia. Our vocal captains Leo, Indiana and Lauren (shown below) led the evening beautifully even though we missed the students who were at the rescheduled Year 6 camp. Leo was very motivated and recorded his parts before he left for camp. The choir students commented on the wonderful audience singing as they joined in our warmups, unison singing and even part singing. Thank you to all the families who are supporting our choirs this year.

ISS Years 3-6 Cross Country
The Years 3-6 Cross Country event will take place on Wednesday, April 2nd, (weather permitting) starting at 9:00 am at Moore Park. Students will participate in the Division 1 race or the “Fun Run.”
Division 1 races are for students interested in trialling for district competitions (students born in 2012/2013, 2014, and 2015 ONLY) or aiming for the age champion title (all age groups). Students competing in Division 1 should have experience running these distances.
The Fun Run is a 1km race where all students will earn participation points for their house.
On the Day:
Students must be in their classrooms by 8:55 am for roll marking. They will then walk with their class to Moore Park. Parents are asked to wait at Moore Park for the event to begin.
Below is the schedule and maps for all races on the day (times are approximate):
9:10 am – Welcome Speech – Spectator recommendations.
9:20 am – Race 1 (Division 1 – 2.5km)
2.5km course – Boys and Girls born in 2012/2013/2014
9:45 am – Race 2 (Division 1 – 2km)
2km course – Boys and Girls born in 2015
10:05 am – Race 3 (Division 1 – 1km)
1km course – Boys and Girls born in 2016/2017
10:20 am – Races 4-7 (Fun Run – 1km)
1km course – Year 3-6 students (excluding Division 1 runners)
All participating students will follow a teacher who will lead them around the courses.
Please refer to the spectator viewing map and be mindful of the Keep Out Areas. In previous years, spectators have inadvertently walked along parts of the course while students were racing. For safety, we ask that you spectate from the designated orange spectator zones.
Reminders for students:
• Students are encouraged to wear a shirt with their house colour, sport uniform with appropriate running shoes (no spikes or bare feet).
• Wearing a hat is optional during the race but must be worn when not running (bring lunch tubs to store hats when racing).
• Bring a named water bottle to Moore Park.
• Apply sunscreen prior to arriving at school and reapply throughout the morning.
• Put on their coloured wrist band and ensure they have their ID number on their wristband when participating in the competitive races (Division 1).
• Students are strongly encouraged to use the bathroom facilities before they leave school – we want to avoid students using the public facilities in Moore Park
Interschool sport – Term 2
Interschool sport will start on Friday 2nd May for our Year 5 and 6 students. They will participate in the season with other local schools for a duration of 4 weeks – Weeks 2, 3, 4 and 5 in Term 2.
Students have been submitting their preferences for interschool sport and their sport allocations will be confirmed by the end of this term.
Sports for this season are:
• Boys Touch Football
• Girls Basketball
• Cricket
• Girls & Boys Football (Soccer)
• Tennis Competitive
• Tennis Non-Competitive
• Table Tennis
• School Based Sports
Please note that some of these sports incur a cost and have limited spaces available; however, we aim to place each child in one of their sports of preference.
Parents/Coaches – We are looking for some help!
If you are interested in running some training sessions for our students in Year 5 and 6 prior to the interschool sport season, we would love to hear from you.
We are hoping that we could have some parent volunteers to assist and provide training for the students for the following sports: Boys Touch Football, Girls Basketball, Cricket, and Girls & Boys Football (Soccer) - days and times are yet to be decided and can be negotiated.
Please contact the PE team if you have some experience in any of the sports mentioned above, and if you can help our students to get some training sessions for their sports in Term 2.
District Sport
Please see below an updated 2025 District Trials calendar.
If your child is interested in attending any district trials throughout the year, please email us as soon as possible. We will record their name and send out more information when we receive this from the district. Please note, we can only send a limited number of students from Indooroopilly State School to each trial. If we have many students interested, we will have to hold a trial within the school first. If your child is selected to attend the district trials, we will send paperwork home which will need to be filled out and signed and then sent back to us before the trials. If we do not receive this paperwork on time, we will not be able to nominate your child for the trials. This is a new process from the district going forward this year.
Celebrating success in sport
Massive congrats to Jasper H (5F) and Datian L (6F), who have been invited to be part of the Met West team to compete at the Swimming State Championship at the beginning of this week.
Further congratulations to Oliver H (5E) and Jack Ballard (5G), who have been selected for the 10-11 Years Rugby League Northern Eagles team and compete at the regional trials this week.
