Chris MuirActing Principalprincipal@indooroopillyss.eq.edu.au |
As Mrs Spanner kindly mentioned last week, I will be serving as Acting Principal here at ISS for the next six weeks. I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself more fully.
I’ve had the privilege of being the Principal at Mount Crosby State School for the past four years. Prior to that, I led a number of small and medium-sized schools across Queensland for over two decades. My journey in education began 34 years ago as a primary school teacher, and throughout my career, I’ve remained deeply committed to Queensland State Schools. I truly value the inclusive, high-quality education they provide to all students.
In just a short time here at ISS, I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the professionalism of the staff, the high standard of teaching and learning in every classroom, and the shared commitment to the school’s improvement agenda. It’s clear there’s a strong culture of striving for excellence—and of pride in this wonderful school community.
This week, students have completed their assessments, and report cards will be distributed via email and QParents next Thursday. Please note, there has been a small change to the wording used to describe the five-point scale on report cards.
There are several key events coming up next week:
• P&C Meeting – Monday at 6:00pm (school library or via Teams)
Everyone is welcome! This is a great opportunity to get involved in the life of the school and have your say.
• Colour Run – Saturday at 2:00pm
A highlight of the term! I’m looking forward to joining in the fun with students and families.
• Under 8’s Morning – Thursday 9:00am - 11:00am
Our Prep to Year 2 students will take part in a range of exciting and engaging activities.
• Free Dress Day – Friday
Students are invited to wear free dress in exchange for a gold coin donation to support the Year 6 graduation celebrations.
Thank you for the warm welcome I’ve received so far—I look forward to getting to know more of you over the coming weeks.
Australian Mathematics Competition
The Australian Mathematics Competition sign-up form has been emailed to all Year 3-6 families earlier this week.
If your child is interested in participating in the 2025 competition, please complete and submit the online form by Friday 18th July. No submissions will be accepted after this date. Time is needed to allow invoicing and event coordination. The competition will be conducted in early August. The cost of participating is $9.00.
Moore Park road surface preparations
On Sunday 22/06/2025 Brisbane City Council will be carrying out preparation works and profiling the parking area in Moore Park. Works are scheduled on weekends and in school holidays.
Lost Property end of Term clearance
Families are reminded to check before the end of Term for any of their child’s lost property on the shelves near the Uniform Shop. Please leave the area tidy for others. Unclaimed uniforms will be donated to the Uniform Shop for resale as second hand items.
Head Lice Notifications
Head lice are a common problem for children of primary school age and can be tricky to eradicate. Recently cases have been reported in several year levels. Through informing the whole school as well as the year levels impacted we hope to more effectively reduce further occurrences. Please refer to the information in the links below for advice on regularly checking for headlice and recommended treatments.

Recent data from the 2024 Resilient Youth Survey confirms what we have seen in our classrooms: The Resilience Project is making a meaningful difference. The survey, which gathered responses from over 140,000 students across Australia, found that students participating in The Resilience Project report significantly higher levels of resilience, life satisfaction, and connection to their school community compared to the national average.
Key highlights from the survey include:
• 61% of students involved in The Resilience Project reported a strong ability to bounce back from setbacks — a 15% increase compared to non-participating schools.
• 74% of students said they felt more connected to their peers and teachers, reinforcing the importance of a supportive learning environment.
• Students also reported lower levels of anxiety and higher levels of gratitude, with over 70% indicating they now actively practice daily gratitude.
As part of our commitment to building a resilient school community, Miss Webb and Mr Tunks recently attended a professional seminar hosted by The Resilience Project, focusing on the importance of authentic connection with students.
The seminar explored how positive teacher-student relationships are fundamental to student engagement, resilience, and wellbeing. Our teachers returned inspired with fresh insights and practical strategies to strengthen classroom connection, including the power of vulnerability, active listening, and creating a safe, supportive environment.
One of the simplest and most powerful ways to do this is through GEM chats at home. These are short, meaningful conversations that give children the opportunity to reflect on their day through the lens of Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness.

These conversations can be part of the dinner table routine, bedtime chats, or even the drive to school. They not only strengthen family connection but also help children build emotional awareness and resilience.

Celebration of Learning in Prep
The progress that our youngest students have made in the short time they have been at school is astonishing! They are learners; readers, writers, scientists, mathematicians! They can chop and blend their words, can write in complete sentences and are able to articulate their thinking. Student progress in the General Capabilities is also evident, particularly within the Personal and Social Capabilities. This provides a foundation for students to understand themselves and others and navigate their relationships, lives, work and learning.
Parents were delighted to have the opportunity to visit their child’s classroom this week to see the evidence of development and work samples that the teachers proudly display in the classrooms. Thank you Prep teachers, for providing this opportunity for our students to show off their skills to their families!

Year 1 have been exploring and creating informative texts this term
And some insects breathe through tiny holes in their skin.
Students have engaged with a range of informative texts (books, videos, websites) that report and describe topics of interest and have created information texts. They have used interesting describing words (adjectives) to facts they have learnt on various animals.

Year 2 Digital Technology
This week students had opportunities to use programmable toys (Beebots), and experiment with adding direction commands to the toys to travel in different directions, making turns and changing direction.
2F have enjoyed creating their informative text about a planet and will be able to share their work with another class.

Year 4 Informative Texts
Year 4H have been busy this week with presenting informative texts on an animal species. With this task, both Sullivan and Daniel prepared an informative text and presented this to the class as part of their English assessment for this term. They were assessed on articulation, projection of voice, pace, eye contact, posture, use of gestures and presenting as an expert. The speeches were well received by their audience of class peers.

Year 5 Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
Year 5 students have just completed our English assessment, where we became budding journalists reporting on breaking news about erosion at “Pilly Beach” following the recent Cyclone Indi. Drawing on everything we’ve learned in Science and HASS, we investigated local sources and used our understanding of natural processes to write realistic and engaging news articles. Our focus was not only on reporting the facts but also on evaluating human impact and proposing sustainable solutions.

Year 3 – Indooroopilly’s Got Talent
On Monday the 16th, Year 3-4 students got to see some of the budding talents of their peers. The Year 3 and 4 session started with a teacher and student council member special, a line dance to the song ‘5, 6, 7, 8’! That was followed by an amazing range of performances, each of which impressed the crowd. A special congratulation to all students from Year 3 who entered the competition this year, keep up the amazing work!

Year 6 Science
Year 6 students had the opportunity to engage with the Urban Utilities: Street Science presentation this week. The interactive session, Beneath the Streets, offered students real-world insights into the essential role water and wastewater services play in our community. Through hands-on experiments and engaging demonstrations, students explored the properties of water, its daily uses, and how wastewater can be transformed into valuable resources. This experience inspired students to think critically about sustainability and future innovations in water management.
