100 Days of Prep
Our Prep children had a wonderful morning last Thursday as part of the 100 Days of Prep celebration. It was a privilege to be a part of the morning. A very high number of parents attended the morning which made it all the more special. Well done to parents who dressed children so elaborately for the occasion.
Choir
This week there were two choir events. The first was held on Tuesday evening at Indooroopilly State School. Our senior choir combined with Chapel Hill State School Choir. The combined concert provided some wonderful entertainment for those who attended and a great opportunity for choirs from both schools to perform to an audience.
On Thursday evening our junior choirs had their combined event with Chapel Hill State School. I was honoured to open the evening and be a part of this great opportunity for the students of both schools.
Cybersafety Info session
On Wednesday evening the Australian Federal Police presented a session to parents about Cybersafety. They title this session: Think U Know. This title, I think, is very pertinent. Many adults think that they are on top of technology in their house, and think that they know what children are doing, when in fact, the technology moves so quickly and our children are on it so frequently, that we are left behind.
Parents who attended found the session to be enlightening. I am sure that a session like this will be offered again in 2026. Watch this space.
Parent/Teacher Meetings
Over the past week, the school has offered meetings to parents with the classroom teacher. This process is essential in understanding how your child is progressing in class. The face-to-face process allows the teacher to provide clearer information than that provided in a report card.
Prep Enrolment Meetings
Mrs Sacha Rogers has been interviewing families who have enrolled for Prep in 2026. This process allows us to capture some information about each child to ensure that we best cater for and place every child next year. If you have not yet enrolled a future prep child for 2026, please contact the school office to organise an enrolment form. Our planning for next year has started and the sooner we capture our enrolments the smoother transitions will be.
Supervision Arrangements for Wednesday 6th August
I sent information regarding the proposed Teacher Industrial Action planned for next Wednesday. Indooroopilly State School will only be in the position to offer supervision to students who attend school on the day. Students will be allocated to either teachers in attendance or auxiliary staff. It is not likely that students will be with their regular class teacher and the usual daily routines will not be in place. It remains our responsibility to maintain student safety for every student who attends on Wednesday.
Some teachers had parent teacher interviews organised for Wednesday. By now, those impacted by this will have been contacted to have this meeting time/day altered. If this is not the case, please email admin@indooroopillyss.eq.edu.au. Other events that are impacted include Life Education and the LOTE excursion. We have made other arrangements to ensure that students can participate in these incursions on alternative dates.

Pyjama Day
We woke to a chilly morning on Friday, 25th July – just perfect for Pyjama Day!
The Student Council and the ISS community are proud to support this worthwhile initiative each year. At the student council meeting, we welcomed former long-time Pyjama Angel Mrs Johnston who spoke with us about the valuable work the Pyjama Foundation does, and where the much needed donations are directed. We are proud that our donation will help purchase resources to support the literacy development of children in foster care.
The Pyjama Foundation are always looking for new angels – if you can spare an hour a week, maybe it’s something you or a family member can consider?

Educators Workshop
This week, we were delighted to welcome educators from twelve local Early Learning Centres and Kindergartens to a special Educator Session. The purpose of the morning was to provide an opportunity for early childhood educators to deepen their understanding of Indooroopilly State School, explore the strengths of our vibrant community, and meet our dedicated Prep and Specialist Support team—partners in every child’s transition to school. Together, we discussed how we can collaborate to ensure a smooth and successful start to school for all children. It was an enriching and positive morning.

Enrolment Interviews and Story Time Sessions
Prep 2026 Enrolments Now Open
Enrolment interviews for our Prep 2026 cohort have begun, and it has been wonderful to meet siblings of current students and welcome many new families to our incredible Indooroopilly community. If you haven’t yet submitted your enrolment, I encourage you to do so as soon as possible so that you don’t miss out on upcoming transition events.
This term, we are holding Story Time Sessions—short, informal reading sessions designed to help children become familiar with our school grounds and meet some friendly faces. These sessions are open to enrolled families only. Last week, we were delighted to welcome nine students from Journey Learning and several other 2026 Prep students as we joined the current Prep cohort to celebrate 100 Days of Prep! See the poster below to enrol today and register for upcoming sessions.
Next term, we will be hosting Prep Workshops on Fridays and Saturdays to help both parents and students get to know our school even better.
Together, we can make the transition to school a wonderful experience for every child.

Vocabulary Matters: P-2
At Indooroopilly, vocabulary is explicitly taught across all year levels because we know the power of words to build understanding, spark curiosity and support confident communication. In Prep to Year 2, students are engaging in rich, text-based units built around high-quality picture books full of interesting and sophisticated language.
Ask your child about the words they’re exploring — you might hear terms like sneaky, pounce, influence or notorious! These words help students think more deeply, describe more precisely, and build a stronger understanding of the world around them.
P–2 students are also learning how to share an opinion or preference respectfully, giving reasons for their thinking. So, if your child is suddenly offering strong opinions or trying to convince you of their point of view — take it as a sign of learning in action! (Within reason of course!)

Prep B Celebrates 100 Days of Learning!
On Thursday 24th July, Prep students marked a major milestone, being 100 Days of Learning! The day was filled with joy, laughter, and creative fun as we celebrated the special day with the wonderful support of families.
The Prep B classroom buzzed with excitement as students arrived dressed as 100-year-olds, complete with glasses, wigs, and walking sticks! The children enjoyed a range of activities, including crafting shiny 100-day crowns, decorating fairy bread, creating adorable "old person" crafts, threading pasta necklaces, painting vibrant patterns with 100 dots and building towers with 100 cups.
We were also lucky to receive a special visit from Indi, adding even more joy to an already unforgettable day.
We can’t wait for the next 100 days!

Year 1
Year 1 students were very lucky last week to be visited by some of our local firefighters, who taught us what to do in the event of a fire. We learnt to dial 000 in an emergency, to get down low and go, go, go; to stop, drop and roll if your clothes are on fire; not to hide, but to scream and shout! We can’t wait for the firefighters to return this week so that we can learn all about their fire truck and hopefully get a chance to spray the hose! 3 images in folder

Year 4
This term students in Year 4 are learning about forces and the effect they have on objects in and around the classroom. Last week, students in 4A made a parachute and tested it to investigate the forces applied to the parachute as it was launched off the landing at Block C. Below are a few photos of the experiment and their scientific diagrams.

Year 5
This term, Year 5 students have been learning how to calculate perimeter and area. To bring our learning to life, we took our math lessons outside. Using measurement tools, students explored a range of shapes on the courts.
They were challenged to calculate the perimeter and area of both regular and irregular shapes, some of which didn’t follow the usual rules. These unusual shapes sparked great discussions and critical thinking as students applied their understanding in creative ways.
Students worked in collaboration to problem solve, using their mathematical thinking to tackle each challenge with enthusiasm and persistence.

Year 6
Exploring Geometry in Year 6: Understanding Prisms and Cross-Sections
This week in Mathematics, Year 6 learners have been diving into the world of 3D shapes — focusing specifically on right prisms and their parallel cross-sections. This hands-on geometry topic helps students strengthen their spatial reasoning skills and understand how 2D and 3D shapes relate to one another.
Students began by revisiting the names and properties of 3D shapes, with a focus on prisms. A prism is a 3D object with two identical shapes at each end (called bases) and flat rectangular faces connecting them. If you slice a prism straight across (parallel to its base), you’ll see a flat shape appear — called a cross-section.
To bring this concept to life, students explored a variety of materials like playdough, fruit, and polystyrene shapes. They created their own prisms and made slices to investigate the cross-sections they could see. These activities helped students to realise that all cross-sections of a right prism parallel to the base are identical in shape and size and these cross-sections are always congruent (exactly the same) to the base of the prism.
From triangular prisms to rectangular prisms and even hexagonal prisms, students compared the shapes and observed consistent patterns in their parallel cross-sections. They also drew diagrams to visualise and explain how slicing shapes in different ways affects the resulting cross-section.
This learning not only supports geometry outcomes but also builds confidence in using mathematical language and reasoning. By recognising how 2D shapes relate to 3D objects, students are better equipped to tackle more complex spatial problems in the future.
Stay tuned for more mathematical adventures!

Kids Stem Convention – Inspiration Day at University of Queensland
Students had an exciting and inspiring experience at the Kids STEM Convention on Friday last week! The day was filled with creative challenges, and engaging presentations that brought science, technology, engineering, and maths to life. Students explored real-world applications of STEM in fun and meaningful ways. Guest speakers from local industries and universities shared their journeys and showed our students many exciting opportunities lie in STEM fields. The energy and curiosity in the room was contagious, and many students walked away feeling inspired to invent, explore, and problem-solve like never before!
